The grid connection
The electricity generated by the Shepway Energy Park will be exported to the transmission network via a new substation currently under consideration.
In England, most solar projects of this scale typically connect directly to the transmission network - the highest-voltage part of the UK electrical grid - which is owned and operated by National Grid Electricity Transmission (NGET).
It is expected that a proposed new substation will be constructed by NGET, to manage supply from a range of potential energy generation projects in the Kent area, along the existing Dungeness to Sellindge overhead line (OHL), which passes through Site 1 of the Energy Park site.
While the need for the new National Grid substation has been established, the location is not yet confirmed, so the Scheme has not yet determined specific routes for the interconnecting underground cables between the field parcels.
We’ll work closely with National Grid to identify a ‘cable route corridor’ to determine how the project will connect into the proposed new National Grid substation.
This proposed substation will be subject to a separate planning application by NGET and would be developed, constructed, owned, and operated by NGET.
