The development process

As the electricity generating capacity for the proposed Shepway Energy Park is greater than 50 megawatts (MW), it is classified as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Projects (NSIPs).

Under the Planning Act 2008, NSIPs are developments which require a Development Consent Order (DCO) to be granted by the relevant Secretary of State.

We will work closely with the Local Authorities:

  • Ashford Borough Council,
  • Folkestone and Hythe District Council
  • Kent County Council

as key consultees with an important role to play during the development of the Scheme.

We will submit our DCO application to the Planning Inspectorate, who review and examine applications for development consent on behalf of the Secretary of State.

In the case of solar projects, the final decision on a DCO application will be made by the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero.

The DCO process and timeline

The DCO process is governed by the Planning Act 2008, and the key stages are detailed in the timeline below.

The Planning Inspectorate

You can find out more about the DCO process on the Planning Inspectorate website by clicking below:

This non-statutory consultation is the first round of public consultation on our proposals for Shepway Energy Park.

We’ll carry out a further engagement, including a statutory round of public consultation before we submit our DCO application.
