SSE Renewables inaugurates its first operational wind farm in Southern Europe at Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye

SSE Renewables officially inaugurated its first operational wind farm in Southern Europe on Thursday 12 June.

Operating in north-eastern France the 28MW Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye Wind Farm is now fully operational  with eight Siemens Gamesa SG 3.4-132 turbines.

Construction began at the end of 2023, and the project was completed on time and on budget. Constructed by Omexom in collaboration with local company, Pothelet, the project generated up to 80 jobs at the height of development, with more than €30 million investment.

The inauguration ceremony attended was by more than local political dignitaries, residents and stakeholders. including:

  • Franck Leroy, President of the Grand Est Region
  • Charles de Courson, Member of Parliament for Marne

Delphine Henri, Director of SSE Renewables in France, said:

“The inauguration of the Chaintrix-Bierges and Vélye wind farms marks a symbolic step for SSE Renewables. It reflects our ability to develop responsible projects in close collaboration with local communities. I sincerely thank all the teams, partners and local authorities who have made this possible.”

With this first operational project in France, SSE Renewables has confirmed its ambition to accelerate the development of onshore wind projects in Southern Europe. Other projects are currently under development in France, with a strong commitment to supporting the energy transition while respecting local communities.
