Braymore Wind Park
Braymore Wind Park is situated in water depths suitable for fixed turbine installations and is located around 18km from both Dunany Point in County Louth at its most northern point and from Braymore Point in County Dublin at its most southern point. SSE Renewables recently secured a Foreshore License to facilitate surveys of the seabed at Braymore to enhance our understanding of met ocean conditions and environmental mapping at the site. We believe Braymore will be capable of generating around 800MW of renewable energy, powering approximately 835,000 homes annually.
The site location has been chosen following a phased site selection process which included regional resource and constraints analysis and an assessment of renewable generation capacity requirements. In addition, a preliminary shipping and navigation review was undertaken to ensure navigational risks were better understood should the proposed areas be taken forward for development. These assessments have informed the position, size and shape of each of the proposed area to be surveyed.
As part of the assessment process, SSE Renewables intend carrying out geophysical, geotechnical and environmental surveys of the area of interest. These surveys will enable detailed mapping of shallow geological and seabed character; reconnaissance level mapping of seabed relief and features (i.e. archaeology); greater understanding of wind resource and metocean conditions; and baseline environmental mapping.
To minimise the risk associated with poor winter weather conditions, SSE Renewables plans to carry out most of the proposed site investigation works between April and October annually within the five years following the award of the Foreshore Licence.
The addition of this blue sea development site to its offshore project pipeline demonstrates SSE Renewables’ position as the leading offshore wind energy developer in Ireland as well as in the UK.
